Manchester United’s Under-19s survived a test from PSV Eindhoven to make a winning start to the UEFA Youth League campaign.
Callum
Gribbin’s fine free-kick and a second-half double from Marcus Rashford
secured the points in front of a sizeable crowd at Sportcomplex de
Herdgang.
The scoreline looks comprehensive but Nicky Butt’s
youngsters were made to work hard for the victory by a lively PSV side
who created chances throughout the game.
The hosts enjoyed the
better of the first half and went close to scoring as early as the
second minute, when Reds goalkeeper Dean Henderson got a touch to Sam
Lammers’ close-range shot and the ball trickled against the foot of a
post.
Soon after, Martijn Berden fired over following a powerful
run and, after United failed to clear a cross, the PSV no.7 again went
close when his shot took a deflection and dropped inches over
Henderson’s crossbar.
Midway through the first half, Henderson
came to punch a free-kick but Dirk Abels got there first, only to divert
his header narrowly wide.
Two minutes later, with their first
real opening of the game, United took the lead. Maarten Peijnenburg was
booked for blocking Josh Doughty on the edge of the 'D' and free-kick
specialist Gribbin stepped up to curl beautifully into the top
right-hand corner.
United came out unchanged at the start of the
second half and doubled the lead almost instantly. Tim Fosu-Mensah was
brought down by Peijnenburg after a long ball over the top and Rashford
emphatically smashed his penalty into the roof of the net.
PSV continued to threaten with pacy raids down the flanks but
couldn’t convert any of their chances, with Peijnenburg heading a corner
wide, Ro-Shaun Williams blocking a goalbound Berden shot and Kenneth
Paal having a strong penalty appeal turned down.
And Rashford made
them pay with a superb third goal, latching onto Tyler Reid’s cross to
fire a first-time finish beyond keeper Yanick van Osch after a lightning
Reds break.
The hosts pressed for a way back into the game but
Peijnenburg’s dismissal for a second bookable offence all but ended
their hopes and the Reds closed the game out comfortably.
